Aretha Franklin

Born in 1942 in Memphis, this daughter of a Baptist preacher graduated from church choir member to soloist to religious recording artist, then tried a variety of music before growing into her role as the "Queen of Soul." A mother of two by age 17 in Detroit, she moved to New York with her grandmother's help. She eventually earned more than a little "Respect" for that hit, as well as "Chain of Fools" and many more. From 1969 and 1975 she won Grammy Awards every year. The honors on her musical resume include having her voice declared a state natural resource by the Michigan legislature, receiving a civil rights award from the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.and being the first female inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.
