African American Astronauts
February is African American History Month, dedicated to recognizing the achievements and contributions of African Americans to our nation and the world.

We would like to join this celebration and devote this section to honoring the ten African Americans who have been selected by NASA to serve as astronauts.

Becoming an astronaut and accepting the responsibilities of flying into space requires exceptional dedication, stamina, bravery, and mental toughness. We would like to recognize these exceptional qualities in the astronauts featured on this page and express our hearty thanks to them for serving our nation.
  1. Michael P. Anderson-- Flew on STS-89 (Endeavour), 1998.
  2. Guion S. Bluford, Jr.-- First African American in space.
  3. Charles F. Bolden, Jr.-- Mission commander on STS-45 (Atlantis), 1992.
  4. Robert L. Curbeam, Jr.-- Flew on STS-85 (Discovery); now training for his next flight.
  5. Frederick D. Gregory-- First African American space shuttle commander.
  6. Bernard A. Harris, Jr.-- First African American to walk in space.
  7. Mae C. Jemison-- First African American woman in space.
  8. Ronald E. McNair-- Died in the 1986 Challenger accident.
  9. Robert H. Lawrence Jr.-- Died in a 1967 plane crash before completing his astronaut training.
  10. Winston E. Scott-- Has walked in space three times.
