Riley "B.B." King
A Mississippi plantation was his birthplace in 1925 and street corners his first concert venue. By 1947, he had moved to Memphis and got a break performing on radio as the Beale Street Blues Boy, which later was shortened to the current moniker. His guitar's name - always Lucille - comes from an incident in Arkansas, when a fight (not his) over a woman by that name started a fire in the bar where he was playing and he risked his life to save the guitar. Now when B.B. and Lucille sing "The Thrill Is Gone," most listeners can recognize their distinctive voices. Over five decades, King helped popularize blues in the United States and abroad and earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987.
