Black International Radio

Black Radio – An Evolving Revolution (see below for a list of international black radio stations)

Black Radio has been an integral part of black culture throughout the 20th century and continues to this day. This is evidenced by the fact that radio stations throughout the world are devoted to this.

The first known black announcer, around the times of 1922, 1923, or 1924, was Jack Cooper, whose earliest broadcasts were from Washington D.C. at station WCAP. Similar to the rest of the United States during Segregation, Jack had to enter the radio station through a side door, alongside the cleaning crew and other African-Americans working in the station. While already a successful businessman, concert promoter, and stage performer, Jack Cooper never let this prejudice interfere with what would later be known as a historical vehicle that was to become black radio.

During the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, Chicago became a focus of black radio where weekly broadcasts that showcased heroes of black history, folklore, and culture, such as Harriet Tubman, Louis Armstrong, Ida B. Wells, and Jackie Robinson. Jack Cooper, for instance, took his radio program from Washington D.C. to Chicago, where his career lasted for over 30 years and expanded in topics throughout that time, as well as expanding the amount of time each day that his shows were broadcast.

The earliest examples of black radio broadcasts shied away from being controversial and, instead, concentrated mainly on acting within the confines of good, clean, wholesome entertainment. However, as the civil rights movement was beginning to take shape during this time, black radio was used as a vehicle for dissemination important messaging about important topics such as race, family, and religion. As a prime example, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was allowed to share the microphone of Atlanta black radio host, Jack "the Rapper" Gibson, to announce meetings and rally listeners around a key issue. In general, black radio served many purposes, including providing an outlet to those in need of sensing a community of like-minded sympathizers and those suffering through similar problems.

Mainstream culture in the United States has still, to this day, overlooked black radio as serving a primary and important role in driving the civil rights movement. In so doing, black radio has provided the foundation for all that followed, such as stations devoted entirely to black music, NPR broadcasts focused on black issues. One could go so far as to say that the evolution and growth of black radio spurred the emergence of black music into mainstream culture throughout the United States and the world.

In some cases, black radio allowed for blacks to take important roles in the community, as well as to provide a stage for up and coming black actors who wanted to take a starring role on radio – an opportunity they weren’t afforded elsewhere. Some of the most notable black radio personalities were Duke Ellington, the Mills Brothers, Noble Sissle, and Ethel Waters, all of whom went on to have their own radio shows. As black radio evolved, black announcers made their way to the microphone, such as Jack Cooper. Similarly, up-and-coming black businessmen attempted to buy radio stations of their own, however none were successful until Atlanta’s WERD was purchased by an African-American in 1949.

Today, however, black radio, black radio personalities, and black culture permeates just about every available radio broadcast, however, none of this could have been possible were it not for the early pioneers of black radio.
