Eartha Kitt

Born in South Carolina in 1928, her father was a white dirt farmer and her mother a black Cherokee, who died when this singer was quite young. As a teen, she worked in a New York factory and lived with friends or in the subways. A dance scholarship led to a career as a jazz singer that continues today, although it was disrupted during the Vietnam War. Within two hours of her anti-war comments to Lady Bird Johnson in 1968, her work in the United States dried up. She's also an actress. Her roles have included Catwoman in the "Batman" TV series and Madame Zeroni in the 2003 movie "Holes."
