Henry 'Box' Brown
In 1848, Henry Brown, a slave whose wife and children had been sold away from him, decided to escape. Packing himself into a box, he had himself mailed to the headquarters of an abolitionist organization in Philadelphia and later went on to lecture on abolition throughout the United States.
