James "Jimi" Hendrix

The Seattle-born rocker lived a short life - from 1942 to 1970 - but his forays on the electric guitar still influence music today. After enlisting in the Army and signing up for paratrooper training in 1961, he formed a band with another soldier. That band broke up when he broke his ankle during a jump and was discharged. He played with Ike and Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, Little Richard and others before forming his own bands, first Jimmy James and the Blue Flames then the Jimi Hendrix Experience, whose top single was "Purple Haze." Although at a popularity high, the group disbanded in 1969 shortly before Woodstock, where Hendrix and his new band made musical history with "The Star-Spangled Banner." He died a year later after taking barbiturates.
